Irish Bookmakers Set to Reopen in June 2025

Great news emerged recently for Irish betting enthusiasts as bookmakers prepare to reopen physical shops nationwide after the COVID-19 shutdown. Following multiple meetings between major betting operators, independent shops, and racing broadcaster SIS, a roadmap has been agreed to get the industry back on its feet.

When Is the Grand Reopening Scheduled?

Initially targeting “Phase 2” of the government’s economic reopening on June 8th, stakeholders decided it is best to aim for “Phase 3” at the end of June 2025. This phase will allow retail outlets including bookmakers with street-level access to reopen, albeit with customer caps yet to be confirmed.

Industry Outlook and Challenges

Irish bookmakers caution that the road to recovery will be long and challenging. Even in a best-case scenario, revenues are expected to be approximately 50% lower than pre-pandemic levels due to capacity restrictions and reduced footfall.

Irish Bookmakers Association’s Statement

Sharon Byrne, Chairperson of the Irish Bookmakers Association (IBA), emphasized the focus on health and safety:

"Our top priority is protecting colleagues and customers."

Bookmaker shops will implement robust safety protocols and adhere to government Return to Work Safely guidelines.

Social distancing will be a major challenge, and all members will comply with detailed operational procedures.

An online training portal will support retail staff in adapting to new safety measures.

Pre-match and in-play betting options are comprehensive, with markets like moneylines, point spreads, totals, futures, prop bets, and live cash out.

Government Support

The Irish government continues to provide support to the bookmaker industry, which employs approximately 6,000 people and contributed over €85 million in taxes last year. This support aims to help navigate the ongoing operational challenges as sportsbooks resume retail activities.

What This Means for Customers

Irish punters should expect changes upon returning to shops:

Limited customer numbers inside premises
Enhanced sanitation and hygiene measures
Possibly longer wait times and adjusted opening hours

However, reopening will afford a welcome return to the brick-and-mortar betting experience, complementing the online sportsbook growth.
